"It (Norwich) was known chiefly as the birthplace of Alan Partridge and it had no
decent hotels. Ah-ha! How things change. A recent visit showed the country's most
complete Norman city taking steps to celebrate its history and its potential. And
it now has a very good hotel, the Georgian House.
Carved out of several Georgian homes on the smart Unthank Road, the hotel has been
carefully opened up, and the public spaces are bright and airy.
I was shown up to a spacious room with heavy dark furniture and black bedclothes
(kinky!). A flatscreen TV, a good-sized bathroom, fresh flowers and fruit were present
and correct.
The room had a small terrace. It would be a nice place to sit out - if there were
any chairs on it. Never mind. I nursed a beer in the hotel's vast, quiet garden,
before meeting my old friends Jon, Victoria and Jonty at a new (to me) restaurant
on Unthank Road.
The restaurant is big on local/traceable ingredients such as Cromer crab but, as
its name suggests, really aims to make an impact with meat.
I had my first experience of Japanese Kobe beef, which came in meltingly soft, almost
creamily bovine slices. Jonty pronounced his liver excellent.
The pubs, the churches and the scenery of Norwich proved as lovely as I remembered.
Now they've got a decent hotel, with an excellent if garish restaurant to match.
Sucks to you, Alan Partridge."
